The Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin (CT,32AA). It is a glycoprotein without hormone activity and is composed of116 amino acids. PCT is produced by parafollicular cells (C cells) ofthe thyroid and by the neuroendocrine cells of the lung and by the intestinebefore being transferred to CT by certain intracellular proteinase. The bloodconcentration in PCT of healthy individuals is very low but rises in a responseto a proinflammatory stimulus, especially of bacterial origin. Quantitativemeasurement of the blood PCT aids in early detection of systemic bacterialinfection, evaluation of severity of sepsis and multiple organ failure caused byinfection, monitoring of treatment efficacy, prognosis of the disease, as wellas differentiating systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) fromsepsis, and virus from bacterial infection.
